Abstract

Problems of teaching and learning social studies is not just the usual common problems recited time without number by ill-equipped social studies teachers. Problem of lack of textbooks; ill-qualified teachers, newness of the subject into educational curriculum. The focus on the problems in this paper is on problems related to content, philosophy, methodology, on administration and assessment and evaluation. Social studies teachers and students being great thinkers who have acquired skills and are knowledgeable about the current affairs of the nation will see these problems as surmountable, not perpetual problems that will bring student/teachers interaction in jeopardy at the cause of teaching and learning. As a result, these problems are brought to the awareness of scholars to see how they could be solved in order to reduce tension between teachers and students at the course of instructional effort and content delivery for higher academic achievement of social studies students.
