Influence of Gender on Academic Performance of Students in Social Studies in Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study focused on influence of gender on academic performance of students in social studies in Calabar metropolis, Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of the study, one null hypothesis was formulated and tested at .05 level of significance. The research designed used was survey, the population of the study comprised all junior secondary three (JSS 3) students in public secondary schools in Calabar Metropolis numbering 5,020 in all. The sample for the study was 660 Junior secondary school three (JSS 3) students drawn from 22 public secondary schools, 15 in Calabar Municipality and 7 in Calabar South using stratified random and purposive sampling techniques. Data were generated through social studies performance test (SSPT). A reliability index of 0.90 was realized using test retest reliability method. The data generated were analyzed using independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis showed that gender has no significant influence on academic performance of students in social studies among junior secondary school students in Calabar metropolis.
