Incidences of Examination Malpractice in Social Studies among Students in Calabar Education Zone, Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examined incidences of examination malpractice on academic performance of Social Studies students in in Calabar Education Zone. To achieve the purpose of the study, three objectives were stated to guide this paper. Related literature was reviewed based on the variables. Data for the paper were collected from five (5) schools in Calabar Education Zone. The population comprised 240 students out of which, 150 were selected as sample through stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using questionnaire as a major instrument. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel Sheet and later analyzed using simple percentage analysis and interpreted into tables and graphs. The results show that, bribery had significant influence on students’ commitment to good performance in Social Studies. It was also found that scientific malpractice had significant influence on students’ effectiveness in Social Studies performance; and that inscription had significant influence on students’ efficiency in Social Studies performance. The paper recommended amongst other things that, Quality Assurance of secondary schools in Calabar Education Zone should extend examination malpractice penalties to all those found liable.
