Abstract

Owing to the undisputable position of mathematics in scientific development and its centrality in technological advancement of any country, students’ declining performance in the subject has always been at the centre of many discourses and studies. This decline has been shown by many studies to be as a result of the methods used in teaching the all-important which does not synchronize with the students’ way of life\culture; thereby making the subject seemly abstract, foreign and useless. This study advances a  pedagogy which harnesses the culture of the society in the teaching/learning process. This pedagogy is Oral mathematics. To do this, the study looks at the concept of oral mathematics, the concept of culture and how oral mathematics can be used to enhance students’ performance in the subject.
