Contemporary Issues in Basic Education Programme Implementation in Edo State-Nigeria

This paper is a review of contemporary issues in the implementation of basic education programmes in the country in today’s era of knowledge based economy, information technology and globalization using Edo state as a case study. In other to achieve this objective, the meaning, objective and an overview of issues in basic education programme implementation in the country was presented as a prelude to the policy issues in the programme implementation in Edo state. The review shows that the current strategies of basic education programme implementation in the state may not be able to equip the younger ones with the necessary cognitive and social skills required of them in this digital era. Issues such as administration, corruption on the part of programme managers and the lack of political will and transparency on the part of government are the major factors confronting basic education programme implementation in the country. Based on the findings, it was recommended that if we must improve on the present process of the teaching and learning in basic education in the state, the need for the programme managers to deviate from the use of imported policies and programmes that are not culturally compliant rather pragmatic efforts should be made to visit all such schools to carry out an on the sport assessment so as to be able to ascertain the areas of weaknesses and focus on few areas that would bring the most benefits to the country.
