Study Habits and Academic Performance of Undergraduate Biology Students of University of Calabar, Nigeria

The study sought to investigate the impact of study habits on academic performance of undergraduate Biology students of Science Education in University of Calabar. The purpose of the study was to ascertain if some students study habits (Study group, class assignment, study time) relate to their academic performance in Biology. Related literature was reviewed. Survey research design was used; a sample of two hundred (200) year 2 undergraduate biology students in department of Science Education was randomly selected using simple random sampling technique. Appropriately developed and validated instrument comprising Study Habits Questionnaire for Biology Students (SHQBS) and Biology Achievement Test (BAT) were used in collecting data. Hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that study group, class assignment and study time have significant relationship on student academic performance in biology. In conclusion, it was recommended among others that teachers and parents should be of great help in developing students good study habits, also creating study groups with fast and slow learners to help carry others along.
