Management of Learning Facilities, Teachers’ Variable and Secondary School Students’ Academic Performance in Social Studies in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between management of learning facilities, teachers’ variable and students’ performance in Social Studies. The area of the study was Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The specific purpose of this research was to find out if management of learning facilities namely monument and classroom ventilation; and teachers’ subject mastery relate to students’ performance in Social Studies. Three research questions were raised and were duly converted into three research hypotheses to guide the study. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The sample size of the study consisted of 30 Social Studies teachers in public secondary schools and 420 Junior Secondary Two Students randomly sampled from the population of 277 teachers and 4,029 students respectively. Data collected using the study’s instruments: {Social Studies Performance Test (SSPT) and Management of Learning Facilities and Teachers’ Variable Questionnaire (MLFTVQ)} were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis. Results of the findings revealed that management of monument and classroom ventilation; and teachers’ subject mastery had significant relationships with students’ performance in Social Studies. In the light of these findings, it was  recommended that the State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) in conjunction with State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) should annually organize in-service training programme via workshops, seminars or symposia to heads of school and teachers on effective management and optimization of monument during lesson delivery.
