Abstract

This study focused on effect of social practices and communal conflict in Southern Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of the study, two research questions and two null hypotheses were raised and tested. The research design used was survey. The population of the study comprised 600 adult rural dwellers selected from ten communities of Southern Cross River State. The sample for the study was 300 adult rural dwellers and used for the study. Simple linear regression was used to analyzed the data of the study. The result of the analysis showed that there is a positive influence of land dispute and chieftaincy tussle on communal conflict in the study area. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made among others that adequate education, awareness creation and sensitizations be made to promote attitudinal change among the people in our communities and traditional rulers should maintain peace and unity in their various wards
