Effect of Unemployment and Security Challenges on the Academic Achievement of Social Studies Students in Junior Secondary School in Calabar Metropolis

Abstract

The study investigated unemployment, security challenges on the academic achievement of social studies students in junior secondary schools in Calabar Metropolis. To achieve the purpose of this study, one (1) null hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. Literature reviewed were both empirical and theoretical. The survey design was adopted. The stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 150 respondents for the study out of 1500 students of 25 selected secondary schools in Calabar Metropolis  of Cross River State. The research instrument was a questionnaire. This questionnaire was designed by the researcher and validated by the experts and supervisor. Chi-square (X2) analysis was adopted to test the hypothesis for the study. Based on the statistical analysis, it showed that harsh economic condition and lack of entrepreneurial skills significantly influence academic achievement of social studies students in Calabar Metropolis. Based on the result, it was recommended among others that government should create employment opportunities and strengthen security situation to promote conducive environment for students in schools in the study area.
