Abstract

The major purpose of this study is to explore the challenges teachers face in the teaching of social studies to address the nation’s quest for reconstruction and transformation. It looks at the existing Social Studies education curriculum as being defective and lacking natural potency to form bedrock of national reconstruction and transformation; hence it advocates for a paradigm shift in the content and pedagogy of social studies education for national transformation. The author observed that moral and character education, policy education and peace education should be the focus of content reconstruction while there should be pedagogy shift to conscientization, scientific pedagogy ad simulation method and then argued that these challenges that are embedded within the structural inequalities regarding Social Studies are a deliberate act on the part of government to decolonize Social Studies and develop a certain kinds of citizenry ideal to the political climate of the country which hinders national reconstruction and transformation.
