Three Social Media Platforms Usage and Mathematics Academic Performance among SS II Secondary School Students in Obudu LGA of Cross River State, Nigeria

This study investigated the relationship between three social media platforms usage and mathematics academic performance among SS II secondary school students in Obudu L.G.A of Cross River State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The study population comprised all the public secondary schools in Obudu L.G.A of Cross River State. The sample of the study comprised of 128 SS II students in Obudu L.G.A. Three (3) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance in the study. The instruments for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled "Three Social Media Platforms Usage and Mathematics Academic Performance Questionnaire (TSMPUMAPQ) and Mathematics Performance Test (MPT). The questionnaire was divided into two sections; section A and section B. section A was designed to measure the demography of the respondents, while section B measured the independent variables (Facebook usage, WhatsApp usage and twitter usage). Internal consistency reliability of the (TSMPUMAPQ), as measured by Cronbach's Alpha, were respectively 0.69, 0.71 and 0.73 r- values. The instrument was a modified four point scale ranging from strongly Agree (SA) - 4 point to Strongly Disagree (SD) - 1 point. Data collected were organized using descriptive statistics (Mean and Standard Deviation), while the analysis was done using Pearson product moment correlation statistics (r). The findings from the study revealed that there was significant relationship between Facebook usage and students, academic performance in Mathematics in the study area; there was significant relationship between WhatsApp usage and students' academic performance in Mathematics in the study area and there was significant relationship between twitter usage and students' academic performance in Mathematics in the study area. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that regular orientation should be given to students on how and when to use social networks to enhance their study habit and academic achievement in Mathematics.
