Teacher Characteristics, School Social Environment and Effective Teaching among Tourism Teachers in Calabar Education Zone, Cross River State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study determined the influence of teachers' characteristics and school social environment on effective teaching among tourism teachers in Calabar education zone of Cross River State. To achieve the purpose of this study, one null hypothesis was stated to direct the study. Literature related to the variables under this study was reviewed accordingly. Survey research design was adopted, a sample of one hundred and sixty four (164) tourism teachers and three hundred and twenty eight (328) students were selected for the study. The questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. The questionnaires were validated by an expert and the reliability was established using split half method and the reliability coefficients were considered high. Data was collected by the researcher and were analyzed using independent t-test, one way analysis of variance and regressional statistical tool. From the results of the analysis, it was revealed that teachers' age and teachers' qualification significantly influence effective teaching. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should be allowed to go for professional development courses that will enhance the acquisition of knowledge that can facilitate their instructional delivery. Teachers should be able to utilize their years of experience in order to boast their effectiveness in the classroom. There should be team work so as to provide teachers with the opportunity of having a strong bond that facilitates their effective teaching
