The Impacts of Insecurity on Nation Building: The Nigeria Experience

This study surveys germane issues of insecurity in Nigeria and their repercussions for nation-building, especially political stability and socio-economic development of the Nation. Presently, Nigeria is beset by societal chaos, uncertainty, political crises, destitution, illiteracy, the weighing scale of disbursement shortfall, impoverished health facilities, tribal and religious discords, dishonesty, corruption, and misdemeanors. Thus, state security is a necessity for the political durability and socio-economic expansion of any nation. Presently in Nigeria, nation building is elusive like a mirage as our economies are in an abysmal state. This study used explanatory and investigative approaches, and the secondary sources of data collection include the library, internet, books, and journal articles. The findings of the study show that insecurity foretells menace to nationwide growth and its existence in every surrounding institute a danger to lifetimes and possessions, obstructs commercial accomplishments, and disheartens indigenous and overseas stakeholders, as they eventually impede the socioeconomic progress of a nation. Therefore, the study based on its findings recommends that the government should be proactive in dealing with security issues, using intelligent techniques and advanced security technologies in managing security challenges, and refocus the existing curative policing to a community preventive policing in terms of security in the country.
