Abstract

Social studies in Nigeria was triggered by the resolution of the Mombasa conference 1968. The wholehearted adoption of this subject was because it came as a socio-pharmaceutical pill to hill the  Nigerian social atmospheres of its decaying norms, values and patriotism at a time when the Nigerian socio- political terrain was infiltrated by Americanised and Europeanised cultures. However, three decades after the celebration of the dawn of new hope, not so much has been achieved. This paper overview Social studies achievement with reference to the National Policy on Education and evaluate the extent to which social studies have contributed to the achievements of the goals of the policy especially as it concerns students’ affective domain, global competitiveness, social compatibility and peaceful coexistence with people of other culture and races.
