Abstract

This study investigated causes of kidnapping and its consequences on socio-economic development  of citizens in Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State, Nigeria. Two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Literature review was carried out based on the variables of the study. A sample of two hundred (200) citizens was used for the study. The research design adopted was causal comparative research design. The sampling technique adopted for this study was the stratified and simple Random sampling techniques. The main instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis was employed for data analysis and results tested at .05 level of significance. The result showed there was a significant relationship between unemployment, moral decadence and socio-economic development in the study area. These findings formed the basis of the recommendations made that: the government, and Non-Governmental Organisations should adopt strategies to curtail the growing rate of kidnapping in the state.
