Abstract

This study investigated cases of violence in higher institutions in Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of all male and female students in the University of Calabar. The study used cluster and simply random sampling techniques. The University was clustered in to faculties from which the simple random sampling technique was used to take a sample of Faculties and students. A total of five out of thirteen faculties and two hundred (200) out of twenty thousand students in the school were sampled. Questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient was the statistical tool used. The study revealed that there is a tendency for students to protest when they are not satisfied with the supply of water, power in the hostel and introduction of exploitative policies. Based on this findings, it was recommended that administration of tertiary institution should make students’ welfare a top priority in their plans.
