Abstract

This study examined home factors and deviant behaviour tendencies of undergraduate students in the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated to direct the study and tested at .05 level of significance. Literature review was done accordingly in line with the variables under study. Stratified random sampling technique was used to sample 592 undergraduate students in the faculty  of education. The instrument used for the study was a 41-item, modified 4-point Likert scale type questionnaire titled “Home Factors and Deviant Behaviour Tendencies Questionnaire” (HFDBTQ). Cronbach co-efficient alpha reliability method was used to establish the reliability estimate of the instrument. One- way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and independent t-test analysis were the statistical techniques employed to test the hypotheses under study. The results obtained revealed that home factors play vital role in deviant behavior of undergraduate students in University of Calabar. Based on the findings, it was concluded that, need satisfaction in the home, religious background and parental education background all significantly influence students’ deviant behaviour tendencies in terms of examination misconduct, substance abuse, cultism and hostility. Arising from the findings  and conclusion, it was recommended among others that parents who play the first role in building children attitudes should pay adequate attention to their wards while they are at home with them by monitoring to know their needs and provides them when necessary
