Some Perceived Constraints to Effective Teaching Practice in Achieving Social Studies Objectives
Abstract
The study investigated some perceived constraints to effective teaching practice in achieving social studies objectives. The crucial essence of teaching is to subject the student teacher to practically demonstrate their teaching competencies for supervision and consequently effecting corrections to their dictated obvious instructional lapses. Teaching practice is a corrective instructional practice rather than punitive measures of assessing trainee student teachers qualities. Student teachers in their teaching practice are faced with quite a number of constraints which hinders social studies objectives. Non cordial relationship between the student teachers and staff, school environment, poor funding, time constraint, lack of knowledge of the subject matter are some of the constraints of effective teaching practice in achieving social studies objectives. These constraints were identified and explained. Based on these constraints, it was recommended amongst others that for student teachers to be effective in their teaching practice, there is need for educational institutions to financially reward and encourage student teachers to ensure its effectiveness. The government should adequately remunerate student teachers to motivate them
