Status of Instructional Facilities and Materials and Students’ Satisfaction with Environmental Education Programme in Nigeria Universities
Abstract
This study explored the status of instructional facilities and materials and students’ satisfaction with environmental education programme in the four Nigerian universities running the programme. All the 200 academic staff and 150 final year students of the programme in the four institutions were studied. The objectives of the study was to determine the Status of Instructional Facilities and Materials and students’ satisfaction with Environmental Education Programme in Nigerian Universities (Holistic view, human resource, library facilities, laboratory facilities and classroom facilities) that are available and of good quality. In addition to these, two hypotheses drawn with respect to the influences of facilities and materials’ availability and adequacy in relation to students’ satisfaction with environmental education programme were formulated. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire tilted “Status of Instructional Facilities and Materials and the satisfaction of Environmental Education Programme Questionnaire” (STIMEEPQ). The data collected were used to answer the two research questions that do not have corresponding hypotheses as well as to test the two hypotheses meant to give further direction to the study. While descriptive statistic was used to answer the research questions, independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. Findings were that the extent of satisfaction with environmental education programme in Nigerian universities is not high enough as expected; instructional facilities are relatively available, of good quality, accessible and utilized. There is need for this to be increased and sustained, and the need for efforts to be made by all concerned individuals, organizations and government to ensure that environmental education programme like other academic programmes are satisfied in our universities were recommended among other things
