Socio-Economic Variables Influencing the Disruption of Oil Company Operations in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria

Abstract

This study was to explore and assess the socio-economic variables influencing the disruption of  oil  company operations in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of the study, two research questions were generated and translated into research hypotheses to direct the study. Literature related to the variables under study was reviewed. A sample of three  hundred  and  eighty  four  (384)  respondents was randomly selected for the study. The selection was done through the purposive and simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and one-way analysis of variance were used to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The result of the analyses revealed that, youth’s unemployment significantly relates with the tendency towards the disruption of oil company operations while the level of literacy does not significant influence the tendency towards the disruption of oil company operations in the Region. Based on the  findings of the study, it was recommended among others that, government and oil  company  operators should create an enabling environment for employment opportunities in other to make the youth’s self- dependent.
