Abstract

The need for effective  implementation of social studies curriculum in Nigerian institution of learning  cannot be overemphasized. Especially considering its compulsory and significant status of breeding functional and nationalistic citizens and bringing overall development in our society. However, some factors have posed impediments to the actualization and implementation of social studies objectives. This is the fault of generalist (unprofessional), as a result of their meddling, interference and involvement in social studies pedagogy. The poor quality of professional social studies teachers in our institutions has a deleterious spillover effect on the products who cannot effectively and adequately implement social studies curriculum, hence, the need for trained and professional social studies teachers to teach social studies. Generalist  should be subjected or exposed to the tenets and methodology of social studies education. This will foster effective implementation of social studies education thereby achieving its objectives in the 21stcentury
