Abstract

This study principally x-rayed social studies education and its role in realizing the objectives of the founding fathers. Specifically, it examined the concept and objectives of teaching social studies in order to attain natural development. It further outlined the role of social studies in actualizing sustainable development and nation building through fostering citizenship education, national unity and moral education. Finally, mechanisms of teaching social studies education so as to realise the objectives of the founding fathers were identified as emphasizing value-based curriculum, appropriate utilisation of social studies teaching  methods, professionals’ involvement in social studies pedagogy and provision of adequate infrastructural facilities. These will foster the attainment of social studies objectives as envisaged by the founding fathers.
