Abstract

This paper examines marital status as socio-cultural factors for teachers’ teaching effectiveness in Social Studies in secondary school in Cross River State, Nigeria. In order to proffer a solution to study the problem, one research question was posed to guide the study. The population of the study was made up of three hundred eight (308) Social Studies in the three-education zone of the Cross River State. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire titled; Social Studies Teacher BioDate (SOSTBD) and Teaching Effectiveness questionnaire (TEQ). The study adopted ex-posed facto design and the statistical tool used for data analysis was One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result from the analysis revealed that marital status of teachers’ significantly influences their teaching effectiveness in Social Studies in Secondary Schools in Cross River State. Therefore, in the allocation of classes, the authority should ensure that certificate/examination classes like JSS3 are assigned to separated and divorced teachers, hence, they tend to do better than their married counterparts.
