School quality and academic performance of secondary school students in Geography in Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated school quality and academic performance of secondary school students in geography in Cross River State, Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of school infrastructural facilities and school instructional facilities on students’ academic performance in geography. Two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and tested at .05 level of significance. The Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 783 students’ was used for the study. The sample was selected through the stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The instruments titled School Quality Questionnaire (SQQ) and Geography Achievement Test (GAT) were used for data collection. The reliability estimate of the instruments was established through the split-half reliability method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was the statistical technique employed to test the hypotheses under study. The result of the analysis revealed that, school infrastructural facilities and school instructional facilities significantly relate to students’ academic performance in geography in Cross River State, Nigeria. It was recommended that, the Ministry of Education should ensure adequate provision and maintenance of school physical facilities in order enhance student’s performance in secondary schools, the Government, parents and philanthropists should provide schools with adequate and functional facilities, among others.
