Dysfunctional home variables and academic achievement of secondary school students in Economics in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

This study examined dysfunctional home variables and academic achievement of secondary school students in Economics in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State. To achieve the purpose of the study, two research questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Related literature was reviewed based on the purpose of the study. Survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of 337 secondary school Economics students in Biase Local Government Area. Total sample of one hundred and seventy seven (177) respondents were selected using the purposive and simple random sampling technique. The instrument was validated by three experts, two from Social Science Education Unit and one from Measurement and Evaluation. Data collected were analyzed using different statistical techniques. The hypotheses were tested using Simple Linear Regression at .05 level of significance. The study found that home financial status and domestic violence had significant effect on academic achievement in Economics in Biase Local Government Area. The study recommended among others that parents and guardians should take up children rearing as an important task which requires diligence and therefore should adopt the best parenting style which could possibly impact there children positively.
