Teachers’ instructional competence in terms of academic qualification and upper basic education students academic performance in English Language in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

The study investigated teachers’ instructional competence, in terms of teachers’ qualification and academic performance of upper Basic Education students in English Language in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The design of the study is ex-post- facto, while the population of the study comprises of all the secondary school JSS 2 students from 235 public secondary schools. A stratified and simple random sampling was used to select the sample for the study. The sample size was 2,980 JSS 2 students selected from 218 public secondary schools. Two instruments were designed validated and used for the collection of data, these were: Teachers’ Instructional Competence Questionnaire (TICQ) and a Standardized Achievement Test (SSAT) in English Language for Upper Basic Education Students JSS 2 to measure their performance. Data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using Independent t-test. . Hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Finding of the study showed that there was a significant influence of teachers’ academic qualifications on upper Basic Education Students JSS 2 in English Language. It was recommended that qualified and professional English teachers’ should be recruited in public Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
