PROVISION OF HOME LITERACY MATERIALS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN OBUDU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

This study assessed the provision of home literacy materials and English Language academic performance among primary school pupils in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research design adopted for this study was the correlational design. Literature review was done based on the variables that formed the hypotheses. A sample of 200 pupils was drawn for the study using the purposive and stratified random sampling techniques. The instruments used for data collection and analysis was English Language Performance Test (ELPT) for pupils. Data generated from the administration of the instrument were subjected to statistical analysis using Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis. Each of the hypotheses was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result obtained from the analysis revealed that there is a significant relationship between provision of digital technologies, reading resources, electronic media and pupils’ academic performance in English Language in the study area. In line with the finding of this study and conclusion made therein, it was recommended among others that home literacy materials should be provided for pupils to encourage them to learn, and that parents should make provision for electronic media for their children and monitor their usage.
