OVERSIGHT OF HEAD TEACHERS AND PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL JOB PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF YALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigated the influence oversight of head teachers on teachers’ job performance in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State. Two research questions and two hypotheses were raised in line with the study objectives. The study adopted survey research design. The sample for this study comprised 215 headteachers and other teachers carefully selected from 15 public primary schools in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Two sets of instruments were used for data collection in this study. These were: "Headteachers' Oversite Questionnaire (HOQ)" as well as "Performance Rating Scale (PRS) for teacher assessment. The collected data were analyzed with simple linear regression analysis at .05 level of significant and 1 and 213 degrees of freedom. The outcome of the analyzed data indicated significant that the head teacher’s oversight on teachers’ usage of instructional materials, and the school scheme of work as applied by the teachers significantly their job performance in the area of the study. Based on the findings of the study the teacher recommended that headteachers should priorities regular classroom supervision to improve teachers' instructional delivery and the government on the other hands provide adequate instructional materials towards supporting effective teaching and learning within public primary schools in the research area
