Record Management Skills and Job Performance of Workers in Small Scale Enterprises in Calabar Municipality

This objective of this study was to investigate record keeping skills and job performance of workers in SSEs in Calabar Municipality. To guide this study, two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated. Literature in areas related to the study was reviewed. The study adopted survey research design and the population was comprising 442 record keepers, and 240 top management staff in SSEs in Calabar Municipality from which a sample of 341 respondents were selected through stratified random sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were Record Keeping Skills Questionnaire (RKSQ) and Job Performance Questionnaire (JPQ). The RKSQ contained 15 items while JPQ was made up of 10 items. The research instruments were subjected to item-by-item screening by two specialists in University of Calabar. The instruments were also tested for reliability using test re-test method which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.79 which indicates that the instrument was reliable. The data obtained after the administration of the research instrument was tested using mean statistics to describe the research variables while the independent t-test was to test the hypotheses at .05level of significance. The test of the null hypotheses revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean ratings of record keepers and top management record retention skills and record disposal skills and job performance in SSEs in Calabar Municipality. Based on the findings of this study, the study recommended that: Operators of SSEs should ensure that records are retained to meet legal and operational requirements. Profit and non-profit making organizations should ensure that records are skillfully and systematically disposed of.
