The Middle Basic Curriculum in Nigeria: A critique of the religion and national values education curriculum

Abstract

This paper examined the newly revised Middle Basic Religion and National Values curriculum structure using the case study design to identify its contents and how these are integrated to achieve required objectives. It also examined the content organisation, appropriateness and adequacy of the curriculum content to achieve required objectives, appropriateness and adequacy of resource materials and evaluation techniques. The paper focused on the Middle Basic (Primary 4-6) Religion and National Values Curriculum, identifying strengths and issues associated with its implementation. The review showed about 90% of the Primary School Social Studies Curriculum Objectives is reflected in the new Middle Basic Religion and National Values Curriculum. Recommendations were proffered for further successful implementation.
