FAMILY PERSONAL AND SOCIAL VALUES ORIENTATION AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

The main purpose of the study was to investigate family personal and social values orientation and interpersonal relationship among undergraduates in public Universities in Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose, two null hypotheses were postulated to direct the study. Relevant literature was reviewed according to the variables under study. The study adopted the correlational research design. The population of the study comprised all final year students in the University of Calabar and the University of Cross River State totaling seven thousand, two hundred and forty-four (7244) students, and a sample of 724 undergraduates, who were selected through the stratified and accidental sampling techniques were used for the study. Two Questionnaires tilted Family Value Orientation Questionnaire (FVOQ) and Interpersonal Relationship Questionnaire (IRQ) were the major instruments for data collection. It was divided into parts A and B. Part A contained demographic data of respondents and part B with 2 sections addresses the sub- variables. The instrument was face validated by three research experts in relevant fields from the University of Calabar. The Cronbach Alpha was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. The reliability estimates were .71 and .77 respectively. Data for the study were analysed using simple regression analysis at .05 level of significance. The result indicates that family personal value orientation and family social value orientation family significantly predicted interpersonal relationship. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made among others that parents should serve as mentors and role models who should educate their children/wards on the importance of acquiring sustained values orientation in life.
