Abstract

Sustainable Development Education (SDE) is vital for equipping Nigeria with the knowledge and skills needed to fight the tenacious issue of climate change. As the country faces escalating environmental challenges, such as flooding, desertification and deforestation, SDE offers an invaluable pathway to build resilience and sustainable growth. However, integrating SDE into Nigeria’s educational system is troubled with some challenges. These include inadequate funding, poor teacher welfare, insufficient curriculum integration, and a general lack of awareness about the urgency of climate issues. Socio-economic disparities, political instability, and weak policy implementation further hinder progress, leaving large segments of the population ill-prepared to address the realities of climate change. Notwithstanding, there are numerous opportunities to leverage SDE as a tool for climate adaptation and mitigation. Nigeria’s youthful and growing population, along with advancements in technology, provides fertile ground for innovative approaches to sustainability education. Additionally, global partnerships and increased government focus on environmental issues create an enabling environment for reform. This paper explores Sustainable Development and Climate Change Education in Nigeria; highlighting benefits, challenges and the way forward for effectiveness. It underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to education that empowers individuals to take action on climate change, thus, building a more sustainable and resilient future for the nation.
