Abstract

This study assessed science teachers’ utilization of test blueprints in ensuring a content valid assessment at the secondary school level. Three research question and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The instrument for data collection was a structured 10 items questionnaire titled ’Science Teachers’ Utilization of Test Blueprint Questionnaire’ (STUTBQ) developed by the researchers to elicit science teachers’ responses . The reliability index of 0.81 was obtained using cronbatch alpha, showing that the instrument was reliable. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions whereas the hypotheses were tested using t-test and ANOVA at p<0.05 level of significance. The results revealed among other issues that science teachers do not utilized test blueprint in creating a content valid assessment at the secondary school level. Based on these findings, it was concluded that test blueprint is an essential skills needed by every teacher to ensure adequate coverage of their topics in relative proportion in any assessment be it test/examination in order to ensure that assessment actually represent the behaviour students acquire from the curriculum. Accordingly, it was recommended among others that Government at all levels should prioritize the training and retraining of teachers on test development processes particularly on test blueprint to ensure that teachers have these skills handy to create a content valid test at all level of education.
