Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of home-school relationship, students’ self-perception on secondary school students’ delinquent behaviours in Cross River State - Nigeria. To achieve this, two null hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study A sample of six hundred and eight (608) students was randomly selected, through the stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The stratification was based on school location and educational zone. The questionnaire titled “Home-School Relationship, Self-perception and Delinquent behaviour Questionnaire” (HSRSPDB) was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by the supervisors and experts in measurement and evaluation in the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar. The reliability estimate of the instrument was established through split-half reliability method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis, Independent t-test and One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were the statistical analysis techniques adopted to test the hypotheses under study. All hypotheses were subjected to testing at 0.05 level of significance with relative degrees of freedom. The results of the analysis revealed that, home-school, students’ perception significantly influenced students' delinquent behaviour in Cross River State Based on the finding of the study, it was recommended among others that teachers/councillors should understand instigators of deviant behaviours among students as a guide to controlling them.
