VISUAL RESOURCES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CLASS 2 STUDENTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN CALABAR SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

This study was designed to find out the relationship between visual resources and academic performance of Junior Secondary students in Social Studies in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. ―To achieve this purpose, two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Literature review was done based on the related areas. The survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 200 students was drawn from the population of 1,122 students using simple random sampling technique. Performance test and a 20-item questionnaire with four-point Likert rating scale were developed and used by the researchers for data collection. Data generated from the administration of the instruments were subjected to statistical analysis using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis. Each of the hypotheses was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result obtained from the analysis revealed among others that while there is a significant relationship between projected visuals and academic performance of students in the study area, the use of flashcards also has a significant relationship with students’ academic performance within the study area. In line with the findings of this study, conclusions were made wherein; it was recommended that teachers should utilize visual resources (both projected and flashcards) so as to actively engage learners to facilitate learning processes which can in turn leads to improved their academic performance. Also, school authorities should provide adequate visual resources for the purpose of teaching and learning.‖
