LIFE SKILLS ACQUISITION AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION AMONG SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENTS’ IN CALABAR EDUCATION ZONE, CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

This study aimed at investigating life skills acquisition and violence prevention among Social Studies students’ in Calabar Education Zone, Cross River State, Nigeria. Two null hypotheses were proposed in order to accomplish this goal. A review of related literature was conducted. The study was conducted using the ex-post facto research design. 6,934 public upper basic school III students enrolled in Social Studies courses in 81 upper basic secondary schools in Calabar Education, Cross River State, made up the study's population. 693 people of both sexes took part in the study out of this group. The researcher used a variety of sampling methods. The "Life Skills and Violence Prevention Questionnaire (LSVPQ)," which was based on a four point Likert scale given to the pupils, was the tool used to gather data. To test the hypotheses, basic regression analysis was used to examine the gathered data. Every hypothesis was examined at the significance level of.05. The result of the analyses revealed that: problem solving skills has significant influence on violence prevention among Social Studies Students’ in the study area. The result further revealed that effective communication skill significantly influence violence prevention among Social Studies Students’ in the study area. It was therefore recommended among others early school-based violence prevention initiatives, like problem solving skills, may be the game changer and should be included in school curriculum to prevent violence among children and youth.
